Foz do Arelho

FOZ DO ARELHO

Foz do Arelho is one of twelve civil parishes within the municipality of Caldas da Rainha.The latest population figures stand at 1,339residents, although in the summer months this obviously swells to accommodate summer visitors. Foz do Arelho covers an area of 9.62km².

Foz do Arelho started life as a village that fell within the parish of Serra do Bouro then in 1919 it was promoted to the status of a parish. It was a seasonal vacation resort, mainly for elite families, one of these being Francisco Almeida Grandela, who was a businessman who promoted and assisted in the development of the region.

One of the biggest attractions of Foz do Arelho is of course it’s breathtakingly beautiful beaches, the miles of coastline and the calm waters of the Obidos Lagoon. Water sports are a big activity in this area with wind surfing, surfing and yachting being always popular. There are surf schools and a yachting/sailing centre that sits on the edge of the Lagoon. They provide for a full range of abilities from total beginner through to experienced sailors.

They also teach;

    • Windsurfing

    • Kitesurfing

    • Canoeing

    • Wakeboarding

    • Water Skiing

There has in recent years been the addition of a board walk and walking paths around the lagoon, that are enjoyed my residents and visitors year round. There are a plethora of cafes and restaurants that line the beach so there is always easy access to food and drink.

Just on the outskirts of the village is an Orbitur campsite for anybody travelling via motor home or caravan.

In the village of Foz do Arelho itself there are all the amenities one would expect of a busy village;

    • Several cafes

    • Several restaurants

    • Pharmacy

    • Post Office

    • Multi-banco

    • Doctors offices

    • Butchers

    • Several mini-markets

About 10 minutes east is the busy and bustling town of Caldas da Rainha. To the north by 10 minutes is the popular town of Sao Martinho do Porto and the beautiful beaches there that stretch right up the Silver Coast.
